Has anybody installed one of the after market high torque starters in there British cars? If so, were you satisfied with the results? Since I rebuilt the engine in my TR3a, the starter isn't swinging the engine like it use to. Of course, it has more compression now; and the clearances are probably a little tighter.

Hi Terry,
I haven't installed one of these. But have you tried cleaning the old starter and maybe putting some new bushings and brushes in it. Most of the time after a engine rebuild the starter is a little sluggish, they also need a little TLC, usually this takes care of it.

Jerry:

I had the starter rebuilt about 1 1/2 years ago by a starter shop. I know they put new bushings and brushes in it along with other parts. It worked find until I rebuilt the engine. I don't have that many miles on the engine since the rebuild and I keep thinking with the better compression and everything being tight that its just harder to swing over. But if that's not the case and the starter is weak, I can't see putting more money into an old starter. Having the original starter doesn't matter to me. I was just looking for something that works.

I picked up a new high torque starter off of Ebay and installed it on my TR3A. Besides being about half the size and weight of the original starter, it spins the engine like the car is running. Really works great.
